Purpose / Ethos

“I am a Desert Creature!" - Liet of the Kin's final words

  • We aim to create a gaming community where everyone can have a fun time experiencing Dune: Awakening together. Sharing the things they love and find exiting. Grouping up to complete goals. And cooperating to achieve success for ourselves and our Guild.
  • The Friends of Jamis is currently seeking dedicated and serious players of all interests to join in the founding of our Guild. Whether you're the type who likes to wander off and explore on your own, or prefer to group up with a bunch of friends to raid the enemy as they're trying to ship Spice out of the Deep Desert, you would find a welcoming group of people in our Guild. In this kind of game, having a variety of skills and foci is the key to survival and success, and allows us to compliment each others' specialties by working together.
  • Our Guild is about enjoying the journey through the world and story of Dune: Awakening. If you like to take in the sights as you adventure, unravel the mysteries of the Fremen's history and sudden disappearance, and search for the secrets hidden about the map or in the lore bits scattered everywhere, our Guild would love to have you join us in traversing and charting the dunes of Arrakis and exploring the story of the game. By learning the landscape and its notable features, and mastering the skills of survival on the sands, together we will become Desert Creatures.
  • (for the PvP interested) The Friends of Jamis protect Arrakis from those who would loot it of its riches and despoil its beauty. We oppose the outsiders who seek the Spice, and care nothing for the destruction left behind in their wake. Whether they use chains like the Harkonnen, or generous words like the Atreides, their attempts to enslave the free people of the deserts will be met with the edge of a knife. But though the desert is cruel, it is not without some mercy for those who show it respect. And knowing when to use each is the path to mastering Desert Power. (We believe in ethical PvP. If someone is crossing our territory, charge them a toll of Spice, Water, or Blood... you can guess how to get the blood. If you're robbing a lone wanderer, likewise make a similar offer for only part of what they're carrying. And if you kill someone then don't be a jerk about it and keep kill them repeatedly, unless they keep attacking you.)

Recruitment Process

Getting recruited is best done on a personal basis by getting to know our members a little, preferably by grouping up with some of us and seeing how well you will fit in with our Guild. Recruitment by a Senior member or Leadership is faster, as they can add you directly to the Discord, but all Full Members can invite people to join the guild as a Probationary Member. After that it's pretty simple, just join in sometimes, try to give back to the guild as the guild supports you, be friendly, and you'll become a Full Member in no time!

Leadership is capped at 5 members.

No limit to other ranks, except for maximum guild size of 32.

Organization

Major decisions for the Guild, such as whether to focus on a specific task (or just let everyone Do Their Own Thing), whether to ally with one of the factions or another Guild, what to focus on in the Landsraad, and so on, will be handled in a regularly scheduled Council where members are allowed to participate as per their place in the Ranking structure. Members who are allowed to vote in Council may also propose measures to be voted on in the next council.
(until the Guild has a chance to establish itself and founding members get to know each other, we will use a simple majority vote to make major decisions)

Rank comes with Responsibility as much as Privileges, with full details of these elaborated on in the ranking-structure listed below. Gaining Rank is a matter of showing consistent interest in the goals of the Guild, and working together with other members to ensure that everyone enjoys their time playing Dune: Awakening. Dumping resources into our coffers isn't enough on its own to let you a climb up the Ranks, but it will be counted as a mark in your favour. Advancement in Rank will be determined on an individual basis by Leadership and Senior members (the simplest and most direct way to rise in rank, is to demonstrate you can fulfil the responsibilities).

Ranks & Responsibilities

Voice:

Guild Leadership: Leadership's In Game role is to enforce the collective will of the Tribe, and determine the best ways to go about fulfilling the goals set by the Guild at council meetings by managing logistics and large-scale organization. Out of Game is where their most important responsibilities are found, as Leadership is in charge of enforcing Guild Rules of Conduct, and mediating disputes between people in our community to ensure a safe and fun environment for all of our Guild members. Leadership members who are found to be 'playing favourites', or otherwise misusing their authority and privileges will be removed from the position and the guild.

Leadership has full access to Guild facilities and resources with no restrictions on use. This is primarily to facilitate the logistics of Guild Operations and the activities of other ranking members of the Guild, and abuse will be punished.

Leadership cannot propose measures to be voted on in Council, or vote individually. Instead they have 1 collective vote that is only used in the event of a tie in council voting.

Kin:

Senior Guild Members: The primary role of Senior members of the Guild is to organize raiding parties, dungeon-crawls, spice-harvesting missions, and basically help people in the Guild with similar goals group-up together to complete them. Most importantly everyone should be having fun! Should an over-arching goal for the Guild be set during a Council meeting, Seniors may be asked by Leadership to assist with carrying it out but are not obligated to take part.

Able to access all facilities and resources except the Reserves. Retains all rights and privileges of prior rank.

Has full rights in Council to vote on and propose measures. May also offer advice to Leadership in their decisions regarding logistics and large-scale operations.

Friend:

Full Members: The responsibilities of full members are simple enough, to have fun, help the guild prosper in general, and when time permits help out on objectives set by the council. Feel free to come up with activities for groups of people large or small, whether it's a spice-haul that will make those involved rich, or a friendly contest to see who has the nicest personal base.

Has access to General Resources and Facilities pool, and may freely replace gear lost or heavily degraded during Guild activities.

Has full rights in Council to vote on and propose measures.

Guest:

Probationary Members: People who have yet to prove their loyalty to the guild, and are welcome to join us on our adventures and explorations, and other things they think will be useful. Also it can used on a Temporary basis for friends and allies of the guild who need shelter. Their only responsibility is to prove how good of a 'Friend' they can be.

Has access to basic Survival Resources pool, and any gear lost during Guild-related activities will be replaced.

Has no rights in Council to vote on and propose measures.

Guild Lore

“Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife - chopping off what's incomplete and saying: 'Now, it's complete because it's ended here.'" - Speaker Unknown

The crash-landing threw great plumes of powder into the air, blocking out the harsh and oppressive sunlight for a few blessed moments. As we stumbled free of the wreckage it was the smell that made us realize it was not sand, but Spice, filling our lungs and opening our senses.

That was how some of us first met him... Jamis, our mentor. Our Friend.

That is how we came to be, following his steps out of the sands. He showed us how to move without rhythm, find safety in the rocks, and the many other lessons we needed to learn if we wished to survive in the deserts we now called our home.

That is how we unfolded the hidden wisdom within the knowledge he had to share, and soon came to understand that the world we found ourselves on was not a desolate prison where we were marooned for the rest of our lives. It was a land where we could be free, a place where we could finally take control of our destiny away from the cruel commands of Emperors, Noble Houses, and Guilds.

That is why we seek out the secrets of the Fremen, and shed the blood of those who would destroy what makes the dunes beautiful. For although Jamis guides his students with kindness, his blade has been slaked by countless fallen enemies.

We are His Blade.

(Lore Context: In case you haven't seen the latest movies, an idea subtly presented to the audience is that Paul's spice-induced visions of Jamis before they met lasted not for moments, but much longer, and that in them he was a mentor to Paul.)

Guild Rules

  • The purpose of this guild is to foster a fun and friendly environment for all players of the game. Harassment, intolerance, and other forms of abuse have no place in it and will not be welcomed. There's no rule against being 'edgy' or even an asshole sometimes, but if you take it too far you WILL be removed from the guild.
  • We would appreciate our members attempting to resolve any differences peacefully, but if you have a problem with another player in the Guild please let Leadership know right away so that we can take steps to address the situation, and if necessary punish the individual(s) causing problems.
  • While it really shouldn't need to be said, I've been in enough guilds over my life to know that people like to deliberately stir up 'drama'. Whether it's because you decide you don't like another Guild member, think someone is playing favourites against you, take friendly competition to toxic places, get jealous because your in-game spouse flirted with someone, turning it into disruptive or abusive behaviour is something that will not be tolerated by the Guild, and punished before it reaches the point it becomes a problem.
  • That said, if you are feeling under-appreciated for some reason, or feel that the general tone of the Guild or some of its members is hostile, please come to Leadership so that we can talk about the issues and see what can be done to resolve them in a way that leaves everyone happy.

Other Activities

The kind of light-hearted way I'd love to see people approach PvP, where everyone is having fun (warning, cursing): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hal-KQOMo-8
