Shields are a defensive asset, used to stop molecules travelling at speeds higher then the maximum set amount. As such, they are used for protecting all manners of objects from incoming projectiles, and even air. They work using the same effect as space-folding, using the Holtzman Effect to repell molecules.[1] [2] [3]It is important to note tho, that shields are a very dangerous thing to use on the planet of Arrakis, because they attract worms. [2] [3] This makes ranged weapons a viable option while on Arrakis, despite the fact that in the rest of the imperium, they are rendundant. [3] [1]

Personal shields

Active shield and UI - blue for water; green for stamina; red for health (shielded); yellow for energy

Personal shields are a big part of both worlds of Dune and Dune: Awakening. [1] [3] Personal shields are used in combat since their invention, and force most of the Imperium to restrict to melee weapons for warfare, as they stop any fast moving projectiles, and render lasguns too dangerous to use, as they cause a pseudo-nuclear explosion. This reaction will not be a part of Dune: Awakening, as lasguns cannot be aimed at shields at all. [4] The combat in Dune: Awakening will feature melee as one of its core combined arms elements, so shields will naturally be a very important part of combat, "forcing" players into melee to fight effectively. [5] [3] [1] The downsides of using shields include attracting worms at a fast pace and having to watch your shield energy level. [6] [3]

Shields in-game take the aesthetics of new movie shields, even turning red upon impact. Shields also seem to allow shooting through if its the shielded user shooting.[7]

Demi/Half Shields

Dune: Awakening also features smaller, potentially more concentrated shielding. However, only enemies seem to have these.[8]

Vehicular shields

Vehicles in the world of Dune have shields also. [3] This seems to be the case of Dune: Awakening as well. [1] Shield - weapon interaction cannot be achieved in Dune: Awakening for better balancing. [9]

Base shields

Shields are used to protect bases too, in both the book and game worlds. [3] [10] Visually, shields are only seen between the doorways and similar openings at the outskirts of player bases. Shields will make bases unraidable. [11] [12] [13] Shields will also need to be powered to help against possible base degradation and eventual demise. [14] [15] [16]
