House Lore

[TO FINISH by ARedPandah] Rich in history defined by their technological advancements and the saga of sorrowful agony that underpins their moments of glory, Their ancient bloodline tying them back far in times pitting them amongst many great house plots and acts of political intrigue with most current rumours alleging to Bronso Vernius true parentage.

Technocrats hailing from the planet of IX known commonly as the Ixians, their economy centred around the specialist design and manufacture of complex machinery, blurring the lines between what would be considered a thinking-machine. A machine built in the likeness of a human mind, threatening to break the prohibitions of the Butlerian Jihad and frequently putting them at odds with their rivals in House Richese in the supply of machine technology to the Imperium and the ranks of the Bene Tleilax who pursue advancements in genetic engineering and have been long stated enemies of the people of IX and by extension House Vernius.

Current engagements have their representatives deployed on Arrakis during the ongoing War of Assassins between House Atreides and House Harkonnen, the house is a tentative ally with the Atreides, given the offer of sheltering for the House Vernius representative within their stronghold compound in Hagga Basin.

Envoy Dialogue

Chayson Vernius, Envoy of House Vernius.

House representative next to their coat of arms

Chayson Vernius [Welcome] You're back. With good news, I hope.

Player 1. I have some questions.

Chayson Vernius [1] What do you want to know?

Player 1.0. [IX] I never thought to see Vernius colors again. It is good to see a fellow Ixian. 1.1. I wish I know more about Bronso Vernius. 1.2. Tell me about House Vernius. 1.3. Tell me about yourself. 1.4. No more questions for now.

Chayson Vernius [1.0] Until recent times, a continuous line of Vernius lords had existed for over ten thousand years. Ours is a saga of agony and glory. [1.1] As I understand it, he is my first-cousin, twice removed. I have never met the man... That is one of the popularly held beliefs, but there is no way to know if it is true. Perhaps he might have been here once. Perhaps he still is. I would hope that wherever he is, he has found some modicum of fellowship and peace. [1.2] The history of our House stretches back to the ancient days of the Butlerian struggle. House Vernius has seen great heights and wearying lows. [1.3] Direct. An admirable trait. I am Chayson Vernius of House Vernius. I am empowered by the Technocrat Council of Ix to oversee the Machine World's business interests here on Arrakis.

Player 1.1.1. What would you tell him? 1.1.2. I wish to know more about Bronso Vernius. 1.2.1. Tell me about the ancient days. 1.2.2. Tell me about the great heights. 1.2.3. Tell me about the wearying lows. 1.2.4. Enough about House Vernius. 1.3.1. What is the Technocrat Council? 1.3.2. You bear the same name as your Great House. 1.3.3. What are you doing here at Helius Gate? 1.3.4. Let's talk about something else. 1.3.5. [IX] Does the Technocrat Council rule the planet in the absence of an heir? 1.4.1. Enough about House Vernius.

Chayson Vernius [1.1.1] I would tell him that he still has family that wants to see him well and restored to his rightful place as scion of House Vernius. [1.2.1] In the days of the Old Empire, Ix was a rich world with deep mineral reserves. It was among the first planets to be enslaved by the thinking machines. For more than a century, our people were subjugated by the machine enemy and forced to construct their blasphemous Cymek army. [1.2.2] After our deliverance from the thinking machines, it took our world many long years to recover. Our surface habitations were mostly abandoned as we retreated beneath the surface to rebuild. [1.2.3] Our lowest point was the nearly twenty-five-year-long occupation at the hands of the Bene Tleilax. Ix still hasn't fully recovered. [1.3.1] Our Great House has seen many conflicts over the centuries. Most recently, the Landsraad declared our Earl renegade for crimes he did not commit. Forced into exile, Earl Dominic and his family were hunted down and destroyed. In their absence, the Technocrat Council was formed to govern Ix. [1.3.2] Yes. Earl Dominic was my grandfather, even if the Regis Familia fails to entirely recognize that fact. [1.3.3] What else should we be? House Vernius shares a long and storied past with our Atreides allies - a relationship enduring to this day. [1.3.4] Of course. [1.3.5] Since the Landsraad declared Earl Dominic renegade and his line was hunted, we have had no one but the Council to rule. If not for the Council, all industry and manufacturing would have ceased on Ix - a dire outcome to be avoided at all costs. [1.4.1] Very well.

Player 1.2.1.1. Wait, the Ixians were forced to build thinking machines? 1.2.2.1. People say the Ixians moved underground to conceal their continued study of forbidden technology. 1.2.3.1. But now the Tleilaxu are gone. 1.3.2.1. There must be some test that can prove your blood. 1.3.5.1. How was House Vernius restored to the Landsraad? 1.3.5.2. Who controls Ix? This Council or House Vernius? 1.3.5.3. Of what crimes were they accused? 1.3.5.4. A fascinating method of governing. I think I've learned enough.

Chayson Vernius [1.2.1.1] It was a bleak time in our history, but we gained much knowledge of technology during our time of bondage. And like Prometheus stealing fire from Olympus, it was powerful knowledge we would not soon forget. [1.2.2.1] Jealous lies. If we conceal anything, it's trade secrets that lesser Great Houses covet. Trade secrets our forefathers bought with blood. Trade secrets that helped us usher in a new golden age for our world as Ix became the preeminent technologists in the Imperium. And my Great House, House Vernius, helped steer it all. [1.2.3.1] Gone? No. They have never gone. The occupation may be broken, but its shadow lingers. We still find their designs buried in our machines, their codes hidden in our archives, their betrayals written into the very habits of our people. You can drive them from Ix, but you cannot so easily drive them from memory. [1.3.2.1] My relation to the Earl is not in question. It's the nature of that relationship. You see, my father is a bastard, sired by Earl Dominic on one of his military campaigns abroad. [1.3.5.1] After Earl Dominic and family fled, our planet was invaded by the Bene Tleilax. Thus began a long, dark period in our history. A dark period that concluded only when the last remaining son of Earl Dominic returned at the head of a great army. After liberating our homeworld, Rhombur Vernius was named Earl, and our Great House was redeemed before the Landsraad and Emperor. [1.3.5.2] While the Technocrat Council handles the day-to-day governance of Ix, it has no representation in the Landsraad, so its reach is limited. To have any interaction with the rest of the Imperium, the Council was forced to find another Vernius, no matter how far down the line of succession. [1.3.5.3] It's always the same old fabrication. Ix engages in forbidden research and utilizes thinking machines to give them an advantage - a bald-faced lie. [1.3.5.4] Very good then.

Player 1.3.2.1.1. Did you ever meet the Earl? 1.3.2.1.2. Are there any other living descendants of the Earl? 1.3.5.2.1.So who is in control?

Chayson Vernius [1.3.2.1.1] No. He ensured we were cared for and educated as highborns, but meeting the family was never in the cards. [1.3.2.1.2] Well as it happens, the last known direct descendant of the Earl was sighted right here on Arrakis before disappearing entirely. [1.3.5.2.1] That is yet to be determined.

Player 1.3.2.1.2.1. Who is that?

Chayson Vernius [1.3.2.1.2.1] He's called Bronso Vernius, and truthfully, finding him played a large part in my decision to come to this desolate place. I can't shake the feeling that he's out somewhere, altough I'm not even sure I would recognize him if he stood beside me. It's been many years and this place changes you.
