House Lore

[TODO]

House Taligari belongs to the Cartel of Gaiety, a bloc of the Landsraad.

The House Taligari home, Zanovar, was destroyed by the Sardaukar of the Emperor.

Some people say it happened because a cache of smuggled spice was hidden there. Others will say it was a pretext given by the Emperor to justify the attack. Really, little can be stated without risking antagonizing powerful figures. The truth will never be recorded in official sources.

The Taligari family is famous for its artists and troubadours, renowned throughout the Empire. They perform plays and operas across the vast imperial territory. Their characterization and the way they convey emotions have earned them an unparalleled reputation among the Great Houses. Interestingly, and unlike other Great Houses, the Taligari House is a true meritocracy, since recognition in the artistic field grants respect and status to both the humblest members and those of noble birth.

They are a home for artists, poets, dancers, mimes, troubadours, and playwrights. They innovate in the areas of technology applied to performance and stage design.

The House's reputation dates back to ancient times. Since the fall of the Thinking Machines, it has earned a reputation throughout the Empire for creating hymns and songs that have been part of the Empire since its inception.

As a reward for their contribution to the arts, Emperor Padishah Hyek Corrino II, who had a great predilection for the arts, granted the Taligari House the status of a Major House, as well as ownership of nine planets for their fiefdom.

Envoy Dialogue

[ TODO: ADD FIRST MEETING DIALOGUE ]

BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Hello! What business do you have with House Taligari?

PLAYER (claiming Landsraad reward): I'm here for my reward.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Absolutely. One good turn deserves another.
PLAYER: Tell me about yourself.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: My name, which tastes like sweet applause to my ears, is Barnabas Brightmorn, a jongleur serving my lieges of House Taligari with dedicated panache.
PLAYER: What is a Jongleur?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Aha! We are the paragon entertainers and troubadours of the Imperium, singing and acting, performing plays and operas across the known universe. By our so potent art, we can transfer emotions so that the audience feels what we and our portrayed characters feel in absolute immersion.
PLAYER (TECHNOLOGIST): Artistry and stage presence mean nothing to cold, mechanical reality.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Ah yes, but someone describing the sky would sound like an idiot to a blind person, eh?
PLAYER: And now you represent your House in the Landsraad?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: An audience is an audience, and all the universe is a stage.
PLAYER: So what's a performer of your calibre doing in the Crossroads Tradepost?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Ah! I am ever rapacious for new audiences to woo and wow and entertain.
PLAYER: Kind of a tough audience out here, eh?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Just the earth salt that requires entertaining the most. I can work any crowd!
PLAYER: Surely other reasons bring you here.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: I have certain, discrete trifles to attend to. More importantly... I wish to meet Zoe.
PLAYER: Zoe?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Wha— Do you not listen to "Five Nights at Carthag"? Wonderful show! There is a character based upon Zoe, whom I adore, and now I shall meet the real thing!
PLAYER: Tell me more about House Taligari.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: We are a House of troubadours and mummers. We are poets, playwrights, dancers, creatives, and innovators of stagecraft and performance technology. House Taligari practices the truest form of meritocracy, for artistic merit earns status and regard from our nobles and commoners alike.
PLAYER: Tell me about your homeworld.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Allow me to transport your mind's eye to the unblemished beauty that is the planet of Artisia, a gorgeous vacation spot that rivals Kaitain.
PLAYER: What makes your planet so idyllic?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: House Taligari achieves most of its wealth and standing through the creative arts, leaving our homeworld unspoiled by heavy mining or industry.
PLAYER: Tell me about your house's history.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Our stage is set, long ago, just after the Butlerian Jihad and the death of the thinking machines. Taligari is recognized as a House Minor. At the time, we were known for creating anthems to inspire rulers and their soldiers to grand action. We were the soundscape of victory. We brewed creative art in our minds and hearts over the centuries — from exquisite operas to lowbrow comedy. We ruled the stage and the imagination. Time passes. It is 3684 A.G. An ominous meteor enters the stage. It collides with our former homeworld. Thankfully, most the population was evacuated.
PLAYER: How did your people survive?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Padishah Emperor Hyek Corrino II, famed for his appreciation of the arts over politics and warfare, awarded House Taligari with nine fief planets. Perhaps this was due to appreciation for the opera composed in his honor… In any case, we were promoted to the status of a House Major.
PLAYER (BONDSMEN): To see a people come so far on skill alone gives one hope.
ARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: You have the right of it. We live to inspire!
PLAYER: That is quite the reward of creative pursuits.
ARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: All it takes is leaders who give the proper appreciation to such fare.
PLAYER: One more thing...
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: As ever, I am at your service.
PLAYER: What is the Zanovar incident?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Ah, you ask of our blackest tragedy, our wound that sings forever.
PLAYER: What happened?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Zanovar was once our jewel—a stage upon which millions lived, loved, and performed the great play of life... Until the Sardaukar descended.
PLAYER: For what reason did the Sardaukar come?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: The Emperor's warships descended on the wings of a lie: that Zanovar concealed an illicit hoard of spice. For this phantom crime, the Imperial Legion reduced our cities to ash and silence.
PLAYER: What were they really after?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Alas! That scene is reserved for the vaulted theatre of the Landsraad. Out here, I must feign ignorance, lest the ushers drag me away mid-performance.
PLAYER: Feign ignorance? That implies you do know the truth...
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Ah, my clever friend! Perhaps I do know... But to speak it aloud would be to step on the toes of emperors and dukes alike. I am but a humble performer, my role written by forces far above me. To acknowledge the hidden script would be to improvise in the middle of a tragedy!
PLAYER: Please, understanding Zanovar may be key to discovering my true origins...
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Understanding Zanovar... Yes, it would illuminate much. But illumination is a dangerous thing. The stagehands of the Landsraad do not allow the lights to fall upon every corner.
PLAYER: I intend to get to the truth of the matter whether you cooperate or not, envoy...
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: A daring declaration! To pierce the veil regardless of my consent! Then mark me well: some revelations are pyres upon which even the boldest souls may burn.
PLAYER: Your theatrical rejections don't dissuade me.
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Oh, the audacity! My every flourish and sigh cast aside like mere confetti! Very well... But beware, seeker, some courtains hide mode than stagehands and props. Step lightly, or you may stumble into more than you bargained for.
PLAYER: Perhaps there was an illegal spice hoard that you were not aware of?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: Please. Were that true, they'd never have sullied their hands with fleets and fire. The Guild guards its monopoly like a jealous lover -- and needs no excuse to pounce.
PLAYER: Are you saying the Emperor destroyed your world under false pretext?
BARNABAS BRIGHTMORN: You put words in my mouth, dangerous ones. I will only say this: Zanovar burned for reasons that would never survive court transcript.
PLAYER: Goodbye.
