Kirab

The Kirab are a hostile group of NPCs that can be found scattered across the Vermillius Gap in Hagga Basin, occupying Camps, Caves, Outposts and Testing Stations alike.

Lore

The eight-year-long War of Assassins gave rise to countless Scavengers, and some of these scavengers formed large bands, like the Kirab.

While they still attack and plunder other scavengers, the Kirab also conduct trade with others like merchants. The Kirab are poorly equipped compared to the troops of the House Majors. However, the group is at least more organized than the Scavengers, while being no better trained or equipped than them.

Relationship with Houses

Nobles are encouraged of collecting scalps bearing recognizable Kirab markings, which have gained popularity as keepsakes and conversation starters among adventurous young nobles.

House Nehtalos took advantage of the Fremen pogrom and started iron mining in the Vermillius Gap. The Kirab subsequently attack their facilities in search for profit. When the War of Assassins was declared, the Kirab took over those abandoned mining rigs.

Different perspectives

Amongst the Kirab there is a common expression "there is only the final oath". The Kirab know how close they are to the edge, to becoming what they despise, scavengers without friend or family, consigned to the southern reaches of Hagga Basin.

As told by Gloos Bohannon, an Atreides deserted, the Kirab previously had a large presence in Jabal Eifrit Al-gharb, before being pushed out by the Slavers from the Hand of Khidr. Kirab are known from taking from the scavenger community, which is itself known for scrounging for salvage.

Technological prowess

  • Harkonnen turrets: During the CHOAM Salvage Rights event, the Kirab found caches of Harkonnen turrets and took control of them in Hagga Basin. As results, these turrets were aimed at cargo-laden CHOAM ships. As a results, these ships to crashed more frequently. This weapon type was on the only anti-air turret shown in-game to date.
  • Transponder codes: During the Scourge event, Frida Maltros mentions that the Kirab were probably spoofing transponder codes and causing medical supplies to be routed through Hagga Basin. As part of the Vital Equipment contract, the Player is sent to investigate a crashed ornithopter near Kirab territory in the Vermillius Gap. The Kirab may have rerouted these supplies, since the infection is spreading among their group. Frida Maltros tried to help them.

If the Kirab are cable of spoofing transponder codes, the group may have routed the carryall of the Mithra harvester through Hagga Basin and used the Harkonnen turrets to shoot down the harvester. The CHOAM Salvage Rights event was as a build-up to the events of Lost Harvest DLC and Chapter 2.

Notable members

Notable members include:

  • Lazaro Fein: Operating out of Testing Station 197, 3rd generation Kirab, Lazaro led a group that overpowered a group of guards, which were hired by a Water Shipper exec, for protecting an ice shipment from the Polar Cap. His group used the station's infrastructure to store the ice and to sell any resulting water. Afterwards, the exec hired CHOAM mercenaries to attempt a recovery of the shipment.
  • Iri: Iri was a leader among the Kirab. While trying to a way to nullify the Holtzman effect, he developed gauntlets that use a feedback loop to decrease power usage. His state of mind deteriorated greatly until he threw himself from a cliff.
  • Menol: Well loved among the Kirab, Menol is know for his Melange spice beer brewing operations. He accidentally discovered that soaking his stillsuit leathers led to a stiffer, more protective garment. Like his spice beer, he shared this knowledge freely, didn't help him much when he was stabbed to death by a drunk Kirab who hallucinated that Menol was a sandworm.
  • Scipio: A Kirab Warlord who took over the Wreck of the Pallas when it fell during the war of assassins. Over time, Scipio became known for his brutal torture of those who trespassed on his territory. He would extract most of the blood from their bodies, then abandon them near the leaking radiation core by the engines of the Pallas. This bag bearing his name is able to tolerate large amounts of reuse - a reminder of its twisted legacy.
  • Drot
  • Brannak: Captain Brannak is mentioned during the Villari's Prize journey, as part of the Lost Harvest DLC. He is known for most kills, best acquired loot, and most offspring. During this journey, is it revealed that the Kirab have stollen a package from the Mithra harvester.
  • Mendia (aka Fila): A well known warlord among the Kirab, Mendia escaped slavery in the north and abandoned her former life. She gained a reputation for brutality by executing any captured slavers, and she defeated Aren, a former Kirab Warlord, in a duel and drove him into hiding in the Southern Hagga Basin.

It is rumored that she, for a while, was mistress to Aren. This may explain why a rifle bearing her name is similar to one wielded by Aren.

While a slave, her name was Fila. She was captured by slavers while very young and dragged to Arrakis to serve the Harkonnen as a slave. While she lay dreaming in a slaver camp in Jabal Eifrit, disturbed by the spice that she was ingesting from the air, she dreamed of a flaming dirk that could set her free. When she woke, a dirk was in her hand. Fila slew several of her captors, burning them with the knife, before she fled south and disappeared. After escaping, she changed her name to Mendia.
