Smugglers
The Smugglers, or Free Traders, as they call themselves, are a family of criminals who carry out illegal trade on Arrakis.
Lore
Smuggling rose to prominence during the rule of House Corrino of the Greater Imperium. They mainly dealt in the trading and selling of spice melange, but would also deal in other goods. When Arrakis was under Harkonnen Rule they saw more business and acted more discreetly due to the volatile nature of the politics and the War of Assassins.
Smugglers would work for whoever would line their pockets with more money and morals were determined by the individual themselves. They usually roam in groups working together even using their own equipment to mine and smuggle Spice Melange off Arrakis. They have their own ships and private armies to smuggle weapons and drugs - particularly spice - in for whoever is buying.
Smugglers are intertwined into the greater workings of the Imperium. Someone elsewhere always needs something and the smugglers would be the ones to reach out. Bribery, secret agreements, threats, and hiding items that should not exist is what the smugglers do best.
Esmar Tuek is one such smuggler with much renown on Arrakis. Esmar was already rising to greater positions in the smuggling business when the Atreides took over rule of Arrakis from the Harkonnen. He and other smugglers started working with the Atreides to get rid of any Harkonnen agents or insurgents that were left over from the occupation. Smugglers were also incentivized to give some of their profits to the Atreides in exchange for better relations. Esmar alongside his group have been preventing the The Syndicate, a large offworld criminal organization, from gaining a foothold on Arrakis. Nobody knows why their mercenaries have begun to arrive in the Hagga Basin, nor what their interest is in the radiated wrecks of the Sheol.
Smuggling became less commonplace in later years after policies became more strict and rules were enforced.
Findings
A recording from a Slaver in Testing Station 24 suggests that the Free Traders were smuggling slaves or suboids.
The smugglers have access to an entire offworld arsenal of lasguns that do not include the safety mechanisms put in place by the Landsraad council, except the Black Market K-28 Lasgun, which is a regular lasgun.
