Smugglers
The Smugglers are anyone who traded or dealt in the illegal transport or sale of goods in the Greater Imperium.
Lore
Smuggling rose to prominence during the rule of House Corrino of the Greater Imperium. They mainly dealt in the trading and selling of spice melange, but would also deal in other goods. When Arrakis was under Harkonnen Rule they saw more business and acted more discreetly due to the volatile nature of the politics and the War of Assassins.
Smugglers would work for whoever would line their pockets with more money and morals were determined by the individual themselves. They usually roam in groups working together even using their own equipment to mine and smuggle Spice Melange off Arrakis. They have their own ships and private armies to smuggle guns and drugs in for whoever is buying.
Smugglers are intertwined into the greater workings of the Imperium. Someone elsewhere always needs something and the smugglers would be the ones to reach out. Bribery, secret agreements, threats, and hiding items that should not exist is what the smugglers do best.
Esmar Tuek is one such smuggler with much renown on Arrakis. Esmar was already rising to greater positions in the smuggling business when the Atreides took over rule of Arrakis from the Harkonnen. He and other smugglers started working with the Atreides to get rid of any Harkonnen agents or insurgents that were left over from the occupation. Smugglers were also incentivized to give some of their profits to the Atreides in exchange for better relations.
Smuggling became less commonplace in later years after policies became more strict and rules were enforced.
