The Player encounters Staban during the Dangerous Allies journey, where he is trapped inside a Smuggler base in the Deep Desert under attack by mercenaries and Sardaukar.

Staban provides the player with an important shigawire reel containing information about the mystery of Zanovar. Before escaping, he sets off explosives to destroy the attacking forces, allowing the player to escape with the reel and continue their investigation.

Dialogue

Staban Tuek: You’re not one of theirs! Good! Father said someone would come for this package. I guess that’s you. ‘hope it’s worth the blood. ‘lost a lot of good people and a damn fine hideout over it.

Player: Are you Staban?
Staban Tuek: That’s right - Staban Tuek. You hit them hard coming in; ‘bought us a minute. Say what you came to say.

Player: 1. It sounds like you know what I’m here for. 2. Your people came at me. I defended myself. 3. You seem remarkably calm for a man losing his base. 4. How bad is it? 5. You sound very different from your sister.
Staban Tuek: 1.a. Yeah. He told me someone would come for this. To put it in your hands if you made it through. ‘guess he knew you’d be coming in hot. It’s a minimic film. I watched it. ‘didn’t make much of it, but two names stuck – Cammar Pilru and Zanovar.

2.a. You did. And I gave the order. By then, anyone not one of mine was a threat. Still… you bought us a little room. That’s enough.

3.a. Panic’s for people who still think they can keep everything. This place is done, so I save who I can, bury what I can’t, and make them pay for the rest.

4.a. Bad enough. Mercs are breaking the place open. Sardaukar are next. Now the place is half lost, my people are scattered, and I’m about to make sure that what’s left isn’t worth taking.

5.a. That happens. We had different mothers. Elara learned to keep her blade behind her smile. I never had the patience for that.
Player: 1.a.1. You listened to it? 1.a.2. That wasn’t meant for you.
Staban Tuek: 1.a.1.a. Of course I did. Men were dying over the thing. I wanted to know why.

Player: What happens now?
Staban Tuek: Now I let the bastards push deeper, and make sure they regret it. If you’ve got any last questions, you’d better ask them now. After that, I’m gone, and you should be, too.
Player: 1. I just need the minimic film, and I’m out. 2. Is this a big hit to your family? 3. Where do you go from here? 4. You heard two names. Cammar Pilru. Zanovar. ‘mean anything to you? 5. You’re really going to bury this place with them inside?
Staban Tuek: 1.a. That package came a long way through many hands to reach you. I hope it was worth burying people for.

2.a. Of course. A base like this is more than stone and cover. It’s routes, stores, trust, favors owed, people who know where to be and when. You can find another hole in the rock. The rest takes much longer…

3.a. Nowhere you need to know. ‘easier that way … if one of us ends up under a knife. Cleaner, too.

4.a. Pilru, no. Zanovar I know by reputation. Taligari world. Pleasure estates, old money. ‘cultivated beauty. The kind of place that starts believing comfort is the natural order of things. Worlds like that never see the knife coming.

5.a. They’re already dead. They just don’t know it yet. I’ve got charges set through the lower sections. When they push far enough, the whole place falls in on itself. Stone, steel, men… all of it!

Player: 1.a.1. If the Sardaukar want it this badly, it matters.

1.a.2. That depends what’s in it. If it hurts the Sardaukar, it was worth it.

1.a.3. People die. What matters is whether the loss yields advantage.

2.a.1. [Mentat] Then your true loss is not structural, but informational. The network degrades with each experienced node removed.

2.a.2. [Honorable] Losses like these shouldn’t just be written off. I’ll make sure they weren’t in vain.

2.a.3. [Trooper] You held as long as you could. That’s what matters.

2.a.4. Places are easy. People aren’t.
Staban Tuek:

1.a.2.a. Maybe. But it’ll have to cut deep to settle that debt. I didn’t lose this hideout for the privilege of irritating them. Here, take it. ‘happy to see it go. Thing’s hot enough to burn anyone who holds it too long. Now get out before the roof comes down!

2.a.2.a. See that you do. Men like mine don’t die for sentiment; they die hoping someone makes it matter.

2.a.3.a. We held long enough to get people out and set the charges. That’ll have to do.

Player: Understood. Let’s get out of here!
