Capacity and function vary widely; some are single-seated, while others can accommodate multiple players, either by design or through modifications. Certain vehicles may also be equipped with weaponry, such as rocket launchers, to enhance their combat capabilities.
Vehicles by Type
Ground
Travelling across open sand in a ground vehicle will attract sandworms. Watch out for wormsign before attempting to cross into another region.
Ground vehicles cannot travel via the Overland Map and therefore cannot be used to exit map borders.
Aerial
Ornithopters (also known as 'thopters) are iconic aerial vehicles, featuring a slim fuselage and large, foldable wings that deploy to either side and "flap" up and down to generate lift, much like a bird or dragonfly.
Ornithopters have two flight modes: Dragonfly and Vulture.
- In Dragonfly mode, the wings beat to provide powered flight, allowing the vehicle to hover and maneuver in any direction — forward, backward, up, down or sideways.
- In Vulture mode, the engine powers down and the wings lock into a horizontal position, allowing the vehicle to glide and reach higher speeds than powered flight, especially when using thrusters.
All aerial vehicles can be used to travel via the Overland Map.
Vehicle Maintenance
Environmental hazards, such as sandstorms and sandworms, along with hostile forces, can inflict severe damage. Regular maintenance is therefore necessary to keep vehicles in optimal operational condition.
Vehicles parked outside your land claim will gradually decay over time, even if sheltered. For long-term parking, keeping them within your base is the best option.
Handheld Vehicle Tools
Welding Torch
Welding Torches are tiered items, with more advanced models reducing repair time and durability loss to both the Torch and Vehicle Module being repaired.
Assembly of any vehicle requires the Welding Torch, and always begins with the chassis. Unless otherwise specified, only one of each module type is required.
Modules from different tiers can generally be mixed to construct a functioning vehicle; however, multi-part components, such as treads or wings, must have all parts of the same tier.
Vehicle Backup Tool
Certain vehicle classes can be stored in a Vehicle Backup Tool (VBT). Specifically, One-Man Groundcars, like the Sandbike and Treadwheel, and Light Ornithopters, like the Scout Ornithopter.
Vehicles cannot be stored if there are items in their inventories.
A player can only store one vehicle across all VBTs at any point of time, so crafting more VBTs does not allow you to store multiple vehicles at once.
Customization
Vehicles can be customized in two ways, appearance (variants) and color (swatches). Refer to Cosmetics for more information on them.

Trivia
- The core concept of ornithopters, i.e. aircraft propelled by flapping wings, is not unique to the Dune universe, and in fact predates the series. There have even been several real-life prototypes with varying degrees of success.[1]
- That being said, ornithopters are perhaps most widely recognised in popular culture because of Dune. There have been many artistic renditions of 'thopters over the decades[2], but the dragonfly-inspired designs from the recent films and games are arguably the most iconic.
