House Atreides

House Atreides is a House Major, and one of the main factions that players can align their Guild with. They are the ancient rivals of House Harkonnen.

In a universe where Paul Atreides was never born, events have diverged significantly from Frank Herbert's original continuity and conspired to place the player character on Arrakis. Paul narrates the game's intro sequence, which explains the chain of events occurring after the game branches off the canon referring the movies.

House Atreides is led by Leto Atreides I and is well-known for its strong ethical foundation, honor, and sense of duty. The homeworld of House Atreides, Caladan, is a lush, water-rich, and foggy world that served as the ancestral home of House Atreides for over 10,000 years.

Introduction

"I see a universe where I - Paul Atreides - was never born." - Paul Atreides

House Atreides' divergence begins with the moment Lady Jessica, concubine of Duke Leto Atreides I, decided to obey the will of Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and conceive a daughter - Ariste Atreides. For her loyalty, Jessica was trained as a Truthsayer and successfully identified Doctor Wellington Yueh's planned betrayal of House Atreides before the Harkonnen assault.

Instead of being taken by surprise in the middle of the night with inactive shields, the Harkonnen and their disguised Sardaukar allies marched into the cream of the Atreides forces and therefore into a massacre. While highly destructive, the Battle of Arrakeen was a decisive victory for the Red Duke and his forces.

Now with the conflict being out in the open, Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV declared a full scale War of Assassins, pitting House Atreides against House Harkonnen in a conflict for control over Arrakis. Eight years later, that war is still ongoing.

Though still Caladanian in culture, the War of Assassins and its long war of attrition have proven devastating for House Atreides' identity. With their ideals of chivalry and honor being tested to their very core against a seemingly unending foe in House Harkonnen, many wonder if the Atreides will even be recognizable at the conclusion of the conflict... assuming they even remain at all.

Overview

Due to the laws of Kanly, the laws and rules of disputes and warfare in the Imperium, any open hostilities between Great Houses are tightly constrained. The Guild Peace is enforced in the cities of Arrakeen and Harko Village, ensuring that blades are not drawn on pain of death lest the houses draw the ire of the Spacing Guild. This has forced House Atreides to deploy in large numbers to areas such as the Hagga Basin, which have been declared as zones of open warfare by Kanly. Atreides agents, outposts, and armed forces can be found all across the Basin, continuing the grinding war of attrition.

House Atreides' seat of power is Arrakeen, located in the far northeast of the overland map. A vast range of vendors, important characters and quests can be found there, as well as The Exchange, which is the player to player market board, Landsraad vendors, and the Imperial Consulate. To reach the city, players either need to construct their own Ornithopter and fly to Arrakeen via the overland map or pay a taxi service at any trading post for 2,500 Solaris to be taken there.

In the Hagga Basin, House Atreides' base of operations is Helius Gate, a large outpost residing on a cliff in the Eastern Shield Wall. Here players can find a steward, who offers faction rewards like the quartermaster in Arrakeen, fugitive Bene Gesserit Sister Mesa who can unlock the Bene Gesserit skill tree, two Great House Contacts for House Vernius and House Richese, and Duncan Idaho, Swordmaster of the Ginaz. Notably, Duncan Idaho is not among the Fremen of Sietch Tabr, leaving his connection with the Fremen in Dune: Awakening's timeline unknown.

The Atreides also operate two military outposts in the Western Shield Wall, named The Aegis and Passage of Artemis.

Origin

House Atreides traces its claimed bloodline back to ancient Greece on Old Earth, specifically to the royal House of Atreus. The name Atreides means “The son / descendant of Atreus” in ancient Greek. They specifically assert descent from King Agamemnon, the Mycenaean leader from Greek mythology and the central figure in the Iliad and the Trojan War cycle. This connection appears in family tradition and is referenced by family members as a source of pride and a reminder of both glory and the curse of hubris that plagued their mythic forebears.

The legend states that this noble Greek-descended line survived the long journey of humanity from Old Terra through the Scattering, the Time of the Old Empire, and the rise of the Corrino Empire. House Atreides especially rose to prominence during the Butlerian Jihad, the galaxy-wide war against the thinking machines that ended machine rule and led to the establishment of the Imperium, the Landsraad, the Spacing Guild, and the Great Convention.

The earliest firmly recorded ancestor is Vorian Atreides (born 223 BG on Old Terra). He is the biological son of the Cymek Titan General Agamemnon. This Agamemnon was one of the original 20 Titans—ambitious humans who overthrew the Old Empire centuries earlier—later enslaved by the AI evermind Omnius. After the Jihad, Vorian warned against complacency and lived into the early years of the new Imperium under the first Corrino Emperor. In around 4 BG, he faked his death in a ship explosion on Corrin to escape public life and the burdens of his legend. He went into hiding while his descendants carried on.

His great-great-great-grandson, Willem Atreides, became the first official representative of House Atreides in the newly formed Landsraad League. Willem founded the House politically in Vorian’s honor and explicitly in opposition to the rising power of House Harkonnen, whose own ancestor, Abulurd Harkonnen, had been disgraced, and whose later members clashed with the Atreides line; most notably, the murder of Willem’s brother Orry by Tula Harkonnen in 3 BG. This marks the beginning of the ancient feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen, which simmers for 10,000 years until finally exploding on Arrakis.

Identity

"There is no call we do not answer. There is no faith that we betray." - Duke Leto Atreides I

House Atreides is defined by its reputation for honor, justice and intense personal loyalty. Among other Great Houses of the Imperium, House Atreides acts as a "moral beacon", especially when compared to the tyranny of its greatest adversary - House Harkonnen. For over twenty generations, the Atreides have strove to uphold their reputation for rugged honor. While seen as morally good or clean, House Atreides are just as focused on maintaining their noble privilege as any other Great House. Whereas House Harkonnen ensures its power through brutality and fear, House Atreides instead weaponizes its reputation for honor, even-handedness, and effective propaganda.

Moral Compass and Virtues

  • Loyalty Above All - The Atreides emphasize loyalty as one of their key virtues. While this loyalty has bought them favor among the Houses of the Landsraad and the support of their people, it leaves them vulnerable in games of espionage.
  • Justice and Humanity - House Atreides strives to treat their subjects with fairness and compassion. When confronted with the natives of Arrakis, the Fremen, Duke Leto reached out in order to forge a peaceful coexistence between his people and the Fremen. The Fremen pogrom, however, ended any chance for that relationship to flourish. Duncan Idaho's status with the Fremen is unknown.
  • Honor, Integrity and Courage - Be it on the battlefield in combat or in the court of the Landsraad, the Atreides act with an openly warm and chivalrous demeanor; something manipulated gleefully by the Baron and his men.

Despite the family history, the ongoing War of Assassins has taken its toll. The clandestine, treacherous nature of the War of Assassins has meant that House Atreides has had to make ordinarily unconscionable sacrifices in an attempt to win the war. House Atreides stands now at the precipice of extinction. Will their honor remain, or will it be sacrificed for ultimate victory and therefore survival?

Structure

Like most of the Great Houses of the Corrino Empire, House Atreides employs its own military with its own hierarchy. In Dune: Awakening, players are able to pledge themselves to House Atreides first as independent contractors, but can work their way up the ranks into House Operator status and therefore a position of trust.

House Hierarchy

Duke / Duchess - The ruler of House Atreides. Currently held by the Red Duke, Leto Atreides I.

Warmaster - The closest thing to a general of a House, responsible for overseeing the training and deployment of its military. This title is currently held by renowned troubadour and mercenary Gurney Halleck, a bitter foe of House Harkonnen.

Master of Assassins - The leader of a House's covert forces, spies, assassins, and other espionage assets. Responsible for overseeing all the intelligence and counter-intelligence operations of the House. This title is currently held by Thufir Hawat, a Mentat and a master assassin in his own right.

Swordmaster - A commander in the field and the personal bodyguard of the Atreides family at home, swordmasters are responsible for the leadership and training of the personal Atreides House Guard. This title is currently held by Duncan Idaho, Swordmaster of the Ginaz and the single strongest, most renowned fighter in the Known Universe.

Notable Members

Duke Leto: Son of the Old Duke Paulus Atreides (who died bullfighting), Duke Leto is well-regarded by other leaders among the Imperium and is seen as a capable and honest ally. He is mostly driven by ideals of honor and loyalty, and is known for his even-handed rule and charisma. It was his personal sway over the Landsraad and the growing power of House Atreides that saw House Atreides granted the sirdar fief of Arrakis by the Padishah Emperor.

Lady Jessica: Duke Leto's concubine and a sister of the Bene Gesserit. She was raised from birth by the Sisterhood and was part of their breeding program. When she obeyed the wishes of the Sisterhood to bear a daughter by Duke Leto, she was trained as a Truthsayer. It was this training that saw House Atreides survive the Battle of Arrakeen

Ariste Atreides: The daughter of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica and na-Duchess of House Atreides. As the would-be mother of the Kwisatz Haderach, she was betrothed to Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen by the will of the Bene Gesserit. The willful Ariste, however, has called off the betrothal, thereby exacerbating the War of Assassins. While personally attracted to Feyd-Rautha, she feels that marrying him should be her choice first and foremost. Unlike much of the Imperium, she openly refutes the Sardaukar account of the Fremen's extinction and has become covertly involved with Zantara the Lion. She studies Fremen culture and has walked the Trials of Aql.

Thufir Hawat: A Mentat and the Master of Assassins for House Atreides, he has been responsible for Atreides security for three generations. Thufir Hawat is the third and final character the player meets during the Atreides mission series.

Anton Tolliver: A lieutenant in the Atreides House military, Anton begins the quest line for players to align themselves with the Atreides faction. He has been given a mission to station himself at The Anvil Tradepost. He sends the player in search of an Atreides agent who had gone missing. He eventually grows disillusioned with the Atreides' treatment of a close friend and chooses to desert.

Andrea Ganan: A mentat in the service of the Atreides, subordinate to Thufir Hawat. She can be found at the Helios Gate in the Eastern Shield Wall. She is the handler of Anton Tolliver and provides missions to the player after Tolliver redirects the player to her.

Duncan Idaho: The most legendary fighter in the Imperium, Duncan Idaho is a Swordmaster of the Ginaz and the House Swordmaster of House Atreides. Despite his working closely with the Fremen as an envoy and diplomat, he appears to have remained with the Atreides during the War of Assassins. He is involved in the Swordmaster mission series.

Territory

Helius Gate

Faction Hubs

Arrakeen

The first settlement on Arrakis, one of the largest cities on the planet and its seat of power. Currently the main base of operations for House Atreides.

Arrakeen is the primary administrative city on Arrakis and serves as the political, economic, and travel hub for off-world activity in Dune: Awakening. The ruling House governs from here, issuing contracts, regulating spice trade, and coordinating military operations across the planet. Players come to Arrakeen to access vendors, manage faction reputation, obtain assignments, and interact with other travelers under the ironclad Guild Peace. The city is populated by House officials, Atreides soldiers, merchants, CHOAM representatives, Sardaukar, and various Imperial officials, making it the central meeting point between authority, commerce, and player activity on Arrakis.

Helius Gate

Helius Gate, Situated in the Eastern Shield Wall, the Helius Gate offers a commanding overview of much of the Hagga Basin. Helius Gate offers Atreides faction missions, an Atreides quartermater, two Landsraad House representatives, and the Bene Gesserit basic skill trainer, Sister Mesa. The area is staffed by port officials, Atreides House security forces, shipping agents, and merchants.

Military Installations

The Aegis - located in the Western Shield Wall in the North-East, right at the border to the Eastern Shield Wall.

Passage of Artemis - located in the Western Shield Wall, straight up North, nearby the bandit outpost The View.

Both installations function similar to bandit outposts but use the Atreides building style. In contradiction to the common bandit outposts, the military ones are a War of Assassins player vs. player area. The stationed Atreides troops are hostile to the player regardless of their ranks with any Great House or quest progress. Each outpost offers various T5 loot including a large chest locked by a pentashield that rewards T5 Duraluminum-tier blueprints. As a randomized event, the outposts can be attacked by Harkonnen NPC troops. The outcome of those squirmishes is not scripted and there is a possibility for both involved parties to win the battle. Nevertheless, the remaining troops are still hostile to players. If a player is nearby during an attack, both Atreides and Harkonnen soldiers face the player and take up their millennia old hostilities after the player character is dealt with.

Trivia & Speculation

Unlike the main or XD continuity, House Atreides does not appear to have a close relationship with House Ecaz despite playing a major role in the Heroes of Dune and Prelude to Dune novel series. Additionally, Duncan Idaho's relationship with the Fremen is not known. In Dune, Duncan Idaho is an ally of Stilgar and fully integrates with Sietch Naib. As the Atreides win the Battle of Arrakeen, Duncan Idaho does not give his life buying time for Paul, Jessica, and Liet-Kynes to escape from the Sardaukar forces pursuing them.

Recruitment

Hopefuls seeking to join House Atreides are directed to seek out Lieutenant Anton Tolliver at The Anvil tradepost. At the conclusion of his mission series, players are redirected to Andrea Ganan at the Helius Gate. After completing Andrea Ganan's mission series, players are finally redirected to Thufir Hawat, the Atreides Master of Assassins.

Journeys

As an ally to Zantara the Lion, Ariste Atreides is first heard in various audio logs at those pilgrimage sites destroyed by the Sardaukar. She is first seen in person at the conclusion of Chapter 1 of the main story. Ariste Atreides and House Atreides play a major role in Chapter 2 of the main story and will presumably go on to play a major role in all subsequent story content after Chapter 3. Additionally, House Atreides offers players one of two ways into the Landsraad system and a significant story working as an Atreides agent.
