The Guide is an NPC that players will only encounter upon their first death by a Sandworm, once they have obtained a sandbike and completed the Journey Across the Gap. They will wake up in a sort of metaphysical realm and have to interact with The Guide to leave again.

Declining the gifted sandbike from The Guide is the only way to unlock the achievement "Lisan al-Gaib". If a player fails to unlock this achievement on one character, they can still do so on a new character. Getting eaten by a Sandworm is also the only way to obtain a Worm Tooth and unlock the recipe for the Unfixed Crysknife; crafting it is a requirement for the achievement "In Their Footsteps".

The Guide appears as a man with rugged hair and beard wearing a Fremen stillsuit. He has a blindfold and his entire form is a muted charcoal grey, with highlights of sparkling purple, showing how he is not physically present but appearing to the player in a form of Spice vision.

Location

The Guide is located in a sort of metaphysical space, made to look like a chamber placed inside a sandworm's mouth.

Dialogue

The Guide: You have been called by Him, by Shai-Hulud. Yet, you live. This must also be of his will.
Player: 1. What do you want? 2. I feel strange... am I dead?
The Guide: Shai-Hulud speaks and says "be prepared to appreciate what you meet". He has taken all that you are and found in your soul no nourishment.
Player: 1. I don't understand. 2. Do you speak anything that isn't gibberish?
The Guide: Plain words then. Pay attention. When the worm comes for you, he takes all that you have. Do not tempt Shai-Hulud. Fear him, or lose all. A fool with a great destiny who is destroyed by God is just a fool. Do you understand?
Player: 1. I don't understand. 2. If the sandworm kills me, I lose everything.
The Guide: [1] And sometimes people are fools before destiny even arrives. Simply put - SANDWORM EAT YOU. ALL YOUR STUFF GONE. [2] (continues to next line)
The Guide: Yes. Except this once. Shai-Hulud is troubled by your hollow soul. He offers no mercy. What he takes is his. But I am here. I offer you this gift. Once and once only. Will you take this gift?
Player: 1. I accept the gift. <You will receive a sandbike> 2. I reject your gift. I will do this without help.
The Guide: As it was written!

Trivia

The Guide is believed to be Paul Atreides appearing as The Preacher from another timeline. He does not physically exist in the Alternate Timeline of the player as Ariste Atreides is born instead of him.
