Duncan Idaho is a renowned Ginaz Swordmaster and soldier of House Atreides.
He resides at Helius Gate, playing his role in the War of Assassins. Duncan also maintains a training dojo in Arrakeen.
Though he has little to say, he instructs the player on how to craft a damasteel sword, lamenting Seron Varlin's inability to forget the past. He wishes for the House Ginaz way to live on, even after the House's destruction.
Location
Duncan Idaho can be found in the upper levels of the Atreides base Helius Gate which is located on the cliff in the southeastern corner of the Eastern Shield Wall region in Hagga Basin. You will find Duncan standing on a balcony.
Dialogue
First Meeting
Duncan Idaho: I don’t think I know you. Greetings, just the same.
Player:
1. Swordmaster Varlin sends his regards.
2. Farewell
Duncan Idaho:
[1] Seron? He's Alive? Where is he?
[2] Godspeed.
Player: He's currently in the back alleys of Harko Village.
Duncan Idaho: What the hell is he doing in that fetid nest?
Player:
1. He's fallen on hard time, battered in body and soul.
2. He survives. That is all I am at liberty to say.
Duncan Idaho:
[1] How did he end up this way?
[2] There's no need to be so mysterious, damn you! How can I help Seron? (Jumps to Skip Point)
Player:
1. It is not my place to say.
2. An enemy brought him low and left him mutilated but alive.
Duncan Idaho:
[1] UNK (Jumps to Skip Point)
[2] Who did this thing?
Player:
1. Count Fenring defeated Master Varlin in a duel, but would not kill him.
2. [HONORABLE] Master Varlin insists on dealing with this in his own way. I honor that wish.
3. It is not my story to tell.
Duncan Idaho:
[1] Hells! I feared as much. Why doesn't Seron get out of Harko? There are those of us who could help him.
[2] Very well. I too will honor that wish. But is there anything I can do to help? (Jumps to Skip Point)
[3] UNK (Jumps to Skip Point)
Player:
1. He's plotting his revenge.
2. He would not wish me to tell you.
Duncan Idaho:
[1] Madness! Hasimir Fenring is one of the deadliest men I know of, certainly the most ruthless. You must convince Seron to abandon this folly.
[2] UNK (Jumps to Skip Point)
Player:
1. I abide my Master's choice.
2. Certainly Master Varlin can best this count.
3. I agree with you, but Seron's mind is set. What can I do?
Duncan Idaho:
[1] UNK
[2] UNK
[3] You must convince him that he has more value to the Universe as a teacher than as a brave corpse. Forgoing his vengeance is a necessary sacrifice.
Since the fall of House Ginaz, more of that culture slips away every day. We only hold onto it by what we pass on. Seron knows this. Remind him.
Player: In the meantime, there is something you can do to help Master Varlin.
Duncan Idaho: What can I do?
Skip Point
Player: Varlin tasked me with forging a Damasteel sword. He says you know how.
Duncan Idaho: He did, did he? Hmm... I'm not keen to set such a weapon loose on Arrakis, but disciples of Ginaz must put School before House in these matters.
You really are his pupil, huh? It is good, at least, that he is training again. Perhaps teaching you will teach him what is important.
Very well. I will teach you. The list of ingredients is... unorthodox. The blade must be quenched in the blood of a slave. That is to say, a blood bag.
Player:
1. Very well. What else do I need?
2. Gruesome, but I suppose every blade is quenched in blood eventually.
Duncan Idaho: Here's an Imperial permit. It is good for one forging. Such permits are not easy to come by for a reason, so don't lose it. Or the blade.
You'll need materials and a Weapons Fabricator. Now pay attention. I'll only teach you this process once.
Player: I'm ready...
Duncan Idaho: You've returned.
Player: Farewell.
Duncan Idaho: Godspeed.
Player: Goodbye.
Lore
A Letter from an Atreides Soldier can be found while exploring the cave network during the mission "The Seventh Trial of Aql" describing an encounter with Duncan:
Father, You asked me what it's like to fight alongside Duncan Idaho. It is inspirational. He lives up to the stories and more. However, something has changed. I'll not forget the first time I saw the Swordmaster of Ginaz in battle. Like an artist with a blade, he waded into the fray with fierceness, yes, but also a bombastic joy. It set my heart slamming in my ribcage and left no room for fear. But the last time I saw him in battle was different. All the skill and deadliness were still there, but it was cold, mechanical. Gone was the joy. All the years of this War of Assassins has taken a toll. Love and honor, Polina
