Dialogue
The Jackal:
Any coins, friend? The blind are usually cast into the desert, but I can live if you are merciful. And generous.
Player:
1. I have no coin to give. I am looking for the Jackal.
2. I’m looking for the one they call The Jackal.
The Jackal:
Then speak the words, friend. What are you looking for?
Player:
The words?
The Jackal:
Speak to my friends. I need to know that you are the one. And the one will speak the words that came to me in a dream wreathed in spice.
Player:
Goodbye.
The Jackal:
You come back, friend. What wisdom have you learned?
Player:
I’m looking for the one they call The Jackal.
The Jackal:
Then speak the words, friend. What are you looking for?
Player:
2.a.1. I seek the footprint of the worm.
2.a.2. The words?
The Jackal:
2.a.1.a. Yes, the words at last. Do you know their significance? Fremen would speak them on their hajj in search of their umma, their personal revelation.
And you are closing in on your umma. Which brings about the end of my vigil. So you are here to kill me. Do you know why?
2.a.2.a. Speak to my friends. I need to know that you are the one. And the one will speak the words that came to me in a dream wreathed in spice.
Player:
2.a.1.a.1. Count Fenring has promised me information.
2.a.1.a.2. No, and I don’t really care why.
The Jackal:
Yes, I knew it would be Fenring. He never stopped hunting for us after Carthag — he never truly believed he had succeeded. You are not the first to come in search of the Fremen. You are one of many. “Find the Fremen. Wake the Sleeper.”
Those words used to ring in my mind as well. A compulsion. But for the others like me, the compulsion was broken. It drove us mad. My brother became mad with endless hunger. My sister sought solace in religious fervor. The youngest of us was overcome with greed. And one by one, you have hunted them down and killed them. Until at last there is only me. Blind and lost, a madman surrounded by the mad.
Player:
1. So you failed your mission? And I am here to punish you on behalf of the Bene Gesserit.
2. I don’t understand. You were sent here as an agent of the Bene Gesserit as well?
The Jackal:
2.a. You have eyes, yet you see less than a blind man. The Bene Gesserit care nothing for us, busy with their plot to wed Atreides to Harkonnen.
Player:
Um-hmm. Then who?
The Jackal:
Who indeed. Who plucked us from our berths on the prison ship and compelled us to find the Fremen? I know only one thing: Count Fenring knows — and that is why you must kill me. You are so close to your answers. My brothers and sisters are dead. Finish the job, and claim your answers.
Player:
1. You need to die.
2. I don’t want to kill you.
The Jackal:
1.a. So eager? We’ve all lost our way. You can complete the mission, but not if Fenring kills you first. Do what you were sent here to do.
Lore
The Jackal is one of four fifth-generation (V) gholas of Tyros Reffa (genetically, the son of Emperor Elrood IX) who survived Count Hasimir Fenring’s attempt to eliminate the potential rival claimants to the Golden Lion Throne at Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino’s behest. He and his siblings (the Paranoid, the Glutton, and the Water Shipper) had been sent by their designers, the Bene Tleilax, to “find the Fremen” in the hopes that, according to Scytale, their search would lead them to Zantara (Bronso of Ix, a genetic descendent of Tyros Reffa), a representative and operative of the Fremen, and the traumatic encounter kindle their latent memories of their former identity, thereby awakening a Kwisatz Haderach under complete Tleilaxu control.
